This story began with a report regarding the immigration protests occurring throughout the country.  The reporter established that there were thousands of people marching against criminalizing illegal aliens.  They also reported that there were also those marching in support of this specific piece of legislation.  After this story ended, some other newscaster began telling a story of something heinous disguised as a game.  The game is called “Border Patrol.”  The object of the game is to kill as many illegal immigrants (Mexicans) who are crossing the border.  The game promotes the killing of “Mexican nationalists, drug smugglers and breeders.”  The breeders are pregnant females with two small children running across the border.  As the “player” shoots the victims, blood splatters over the screen.   The “breeder” is worth the most points.  It is a disgusting and unbelievable “game.”  So repulsive is this game that one white supremacist indicated that we should be happy they are just “playing the game” and insinuating that we are lucky it is not reality…yet.

            After I saw this clip, I just sat there in unbelief.  As if that were not enough, the program showed other sordid video games, which target Jews and African Americans.  You can be sure that the GLBT population is not excluded when it comes to something like this. 

            It is beyond comprehension what possesses someone to dehumanize another person.  What could have happened in this person’s past that would cause such a horrific case of hate?  Yes, one can argue it is just a game.  I can here it now, “Ah, Denise, lighten up, it’s just a game.”  Games don’t influence people!  Yes, they do.  There are those who are vulnerable members of our society that are easily influenced by games and by bigotry.  We see it all the time.  What is that saying?  Garbage in, garbage out.  The more garbage we put in our mind, the more garbage is going to manifest in of our lives.  We see this happening all over the world.  Ethnic cleansing is occurring and most of us don’t even know it.  These video games perpetuate the idea that ethnic cleansing is “just a game.”  What’s the harm in shooting a few “wetbacks” anyway?  We’re all adult enough to know this isn’t reality, it’s just a game, we’re just having a little fun.  Let’s keep fooling ourselves.  Let’s keep turning our heads and believing that nothing could come of this game that is sweeping through the Internet.  It’s not effecting most of us personally any way.  As Edmund Burke once said, “All that is necessary for evil to succeed is that good men [women] do nothing.”  History has already proven what the outcome of indifference is, what will this outcome be?  The choice is yours.
