I was sifting through the MSNBC website and visually stumbled upon an article purporting that there is a tremendous amount of interest in who is the best debate team in the nation. Quite frankly, I never really thought about it. Who would really care about a debate team? Don't get me wrong, I'm not dogging it, I guess I didn't realize the magnitude of it all until I read this article. Who do you think is the number one university/college debate team in the country? Do I hear votes for Harvard or Yale? How about USC or Columbia? The number one debate team is Liberty University. Who is that you ask? Ever heard of Jerry Falwell? Yup, you guessed it. Liberty University was founded by Jerry Falwell, one of the current leaders of the evangelical movement; but first he had to be absolved of his little tryst way back when.
No big deal, you may say? Well, it is a big deal. Seems that Mr. Falwell is determined to rise up a bunch of champion debaters because he feels that the better they debate, the less sin there will be in the world. What a concept, huh? Think fast on your feet so you'll keep them on the ground. As I recall, back in the 40's and 50's they did the "feet stay on the ground" on TV sitcoms. First they never showed a married couple with anything other than twin beds in the bedroom. When they got a little more brave, they moved to a queen bed, but one of them had to keep one foot on the floor, as if that would ever stop them!
Mr. Falwell appears to want a country full of moral confusion. So how do they intend on accomplishing this? Well, one of the star freshmen was interviewed and was quoted as saying that he is going to grow up and..I mean graduate and go to law school. Once graduated from law school, he will have the skills to become a justice, on the Supreme Court, so he can overturn Roe v Wade and make sure Gay marriage is outlawed.
So there you have it. Liberty University's goal is to churn out so many champion debaters who become lawyers, that they will infiltrate the justice system and change this country into the kingdom of Falwell. And here I thought it was just because they liked to argue. Interesting isn't it? While we are working away in trying to get ahead, LU is cloning little Falwell's so they can tell us what to do with personal lives. Remember that their constitution says that "all people are created equal" but it doesn't really mean that. Their interpretation, which I'm sure they would love to debate, really means that all people are created equal as long as we all believe what they do. And if we don't believe the way they do, we will be pitted against champion debaters until we are verbally battered and confused into submission.
History has a way of repeating itself, doesn't it? In ancient times, the scribes were the master debaters (Mark 1:21-28). They would debate the holy writings in the synagogues. They took pride in their status and knowledge and liked to use it to confuse the lay people. It didn't work then and I have confidence that it won't work now. Sooner or later we will all recognize true Wisdom comes from who we are, not what we know. We can use quotation after quotation but it doesn't compare to experience. Speaking from the heart to inspire is much more powerful than quoting another source to confuse.
Mr. Falwell might be rising up debaters, but God is rising up co-creators. God is inspiring people to have new ideas, thoughts and experiences that will quash the confusion Falwell wants to perpetuate. And that my friends, is not debatable. |
