FORGIVE ME FOR I HAVE….
Flipping through a weekend newspaper, I came upon an article that caught my eye. Typically, I pull out the sports section and choose to read only the low lights of my favorite teams, hoping that one day the “high” lights will stand for something other than what the opposing team scored. On this day, for “some” reason, I happened to pick up the national news section and saw a headline that said, “Catholic” and “Homosexual” in the same sentence. As you can imagine, my curiosity got the best of me.

As I read the article my curiosity gave way to fire. According to the article there is an ongoing homosexual hunt going on in the Catholic Church. The command has come down that every nook and cranny should be explored, every rock overturned, in search of homosexuals in the priesthood. “Well shiver me timbers!” I gasped. If they weeded out all of the homosexuals, would there be many priests left? I say that with the utmost respect, mind you.
I’m sure that all of us from a Catholic background can point to at least one priest who was/is clearly gay, who served the parish with dignity, character and compassion. So why the witch hunt? Seems that the recent and not so recent abuse scandal has resulted in a concern that those who are homosexuals may have a stronger than “normal” predisposition to be abusers than heterosexuals. Hmmm….I must admit that I don’t know languages other than English and Spanish very well. Could it be that the English words homosexual and pedophile are the same word in Latin? It’s doubtful, but what other explanation is there? Clearly in English the two words are miles apart in definition.
I don’t know why I find this surprising. After all, in my opinion, the Catholic Church is the creator and best enforcer of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that they are finally attempting to be proactive instead of reactive, although that’s debatable right now. My gripe is that once again, homosexuals are the scapegoat for the world’s ills. I have been extremely surprised that someone hasn’t pointed to Katrina as God’s punishment for those gregarious Gulf Coast gays!
--Sigh--
One can only hope that justice will prevail. That those who are truly responsible for the abuse will be held responsible. One can only hope that the guilty who are lurking in the nooks and crannies will be smoked out, without collateral damage of the innocent. One can only hope….and when we’ve lost all hope, we can rest assured that if the guilty go free and the innocent are found guilty, the One true gavel of Justice has not yet sounded. “ If you've got it in you, get along with everybody. Don't insist on getting even; that's not for you to do. ‘I'll do the judging,’ says God. ‘I'll take care of it.’ Romans 12:18-19 The Message.
Finally, something to look forward to and be thankful for!
